Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) also known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) is a “Rare” chronic pain disorder with autoimmune components that is believed to be the result of dysfunction in the central or peripheral nervous systems. There is no cure, and currently very few effective treatments.
Although CRPS was 1st documented in the United States during the Civil War it has gone through several name changes Older terms used to describe CRPS are:
- Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD),
- Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSDS),
- Sudecks’ Atrophy,
- Post-Traumatic Dystrophy,
- Shoulder-Hand Syndrome,
- Reflex Neurovascular Dystrophy (RND),
Causalgia is the term first used during the Civil War to describe the intense, burning pain felt by some soldiers long after their wounds had healed.
